Open House Held For Bergman

On Friday, Jan. 28 the Eastern Agricultural Research Center (EARC) staff held an open house for Dr. Jerry Bergman, who has retired from the Montana State University system to accept the position as NDSU Williston Research and Extension Center director. Bergman served 38 years as agronomist, plant breeder and director of the EARC, Sidney. The EARC staff held a luncheon for staff and former staff, and then opened the doors to the public to come and wish Bergman well in his new venture.

During his tenure here in Montana, Bergman has proven himself a true advocate for agriculture. He has worked tirelessly to promote agriculture and ag research in the MonDak and his extraordinary vision has allowed him to look ahead into the coming years to project and plan for future needs within the ag community.

His efforts as an agronomist and plant breeder have provided 14 new varieties of safflower for regional growers, the development of high oleic and high linoleic safflower oils, and new markets for safflower and safflower products. His vision for a new facility for the EARC and the Extension service also materialized this year.

To thank him in a small way for his efforts, the EARC staff presented Bergman with a metal sign. The Richland Economic Development Board also presented Bergman with a plaque to honor and thank him for his 15 years of service on the Richland Economic Development Board.

Although he is now working for North Dakota, Bergman plans to continue his efforts to increase funding for ag research centers in Montana and he intends to continue to work for the expansion of ag research in the MonDak region.
