Level 4

This was the first time in several years that SGC has fielded a full team (minimum of 3) of qymnasts at this level; the last two years Hannah Hasvold having to compete by herself. This year she qualified for state, but was unable to compete due to a hamstring injury; her experience was sorely missed. But the three new SGC L4 gymnasts Lorraine Coronato, Bethany Wells, and Bailey Vitt stepped up to state, receiving their highest all around scores of the year, and increasing their team score by almost four points from the last competition – 99.9000 to 103.295. Each girl also placed top five in at least two events!

Level 3

Last year, the gymnasts at this level won team awards at three out of 8 meets; and placed 8th at state. Their goal this season was to significantly improve an last year’s finishes. This year they accomplished this goal in a dramatic fashion.

Going into State, the L3 team had won team awards at nine out of nine competitions-an incredible feat involving a lot of hard work by the girls. In gymnastics, both individual and team placements are often separated by only tenths-or a tenth-or half or even a quarter of a tenth of a point! In some of the competitions prior to state the Level3’s had missed first or second place team by only one or two tenths.

The last 6 weeks before state, a big push was put on in practice to “make up” those missing tenths. To be the team who won by a tenth, not missed out on a place by a tenth. Coach hammered the girls to fix their form; improve their gymnastics posture; and “stick” every landing. The last meet prior to state, coach had the girls repeat several times before the competition; “Step Up!” Step up they did, defeating the third place team place team by a mere half a tenth, and forth place by one tenth.

Going into the State Meet, as the warm-up began, the girls got together and repeated: “Step Up! Stay Up! And Step Some More!” And indeed they did!

When the chalk dust settled, the SGC L3 Team received the second place banner for the Eastern half of Montana; and they placed out of the entire state.

Four SGC girls took place on different events to receive the title of State Champion.” Liliana Johnson State Champ on Vault; Kat Hill State Champ on Bars; Becca Deming State Champ on Beam; and Suttyn Barnhart State Champ in the Floor Exercise.
