Sunrise City Slam Coming To Sidney

Sidney will be buzzing Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28 as 57 teams from third-eighth grade converge on the city for a weekend of great basketball. The second annual Sunrise City Slam benefits The Sunrise Women’s Clinic, the Boys and Girls Club of the MonDak - Richland Unit, Sidney Public Schools and the Sidney Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, with profits divided equally. Chamber director Kali Godfrey said teams are expected from about a four-hour radius of town, including as far away as Regina, Saskatchewan.

Games will be played at Central School, the Middle School and High School from about 7 a.m.-9 p.m., depending on how many teams participate. Each game will feature a MOA (certified Montana official) as well as a student athlete referee. Godfrey gave a big shout out to local referees Nate Creek and Lonnie Swigart without whom she said the tournament could not happen. She said the referee pool is really innovative and noted that they are actively trying to recruit more refs.

Major sponsors of the event are Sidney TBID, Ranger Lounge, Casino and Eatery, Saloon 27 and Mid-Rivers Communications. Countless other sponsors and volunteers are crucial to the success of the tournament.
