Agriculture Ambassador Program at WSC Wraps it up for the Year

The Williston State College (WSC) Agriculture Ambassador Program is rounding out the year with a heavy emphasis on production. The Agriculture Courses are wrapping up soon for the semester to enable the students to get home and start preparing for spring work and/or to start work in the Agriculture industry before the busy spring season arrives.

Last semester, some of the Ambassadors took some time to speak to elementary students about Agriculture. Their presentation was mainly to introduce the importance of agriculture as an industry and to talk about the different crops that are grown throughout the world and how they are used. In order to allow the kids to interact, the Ambassadors brought along the ingredients to make their own trail mix. The trail mix was made from foods discussed in the presentation such as peanuts, chocolate, pretzels and raisins. The Ambassadors even brought along milk so each student had a small glass to wash it all down.

The Ambassadors have two things left to complete prior to graduation: 1) Leadership training in Regina, SK on "How to be an Outstanding Communicator." 2) Market Place for Kids – held on April 15th at the Williston State College campus. The Agriculture Club, Ambassadors and a couple of alumni will be working on a "Living Ag Classroom" for the elementary students who will be attending Market Place for Kids.

"We did this last year and had great reviews from teachers, students and Market Place for Kids staff," stated Ag advisor Kim Murphy. "Last year we had a horse, two calves, some baby chicks, a tractor (for the kids to climb into the cab and sit) and we had seeds to plant. We plan to have a similar line up again this year."

The following students are involved in the Agriculture Ambassador Program: Melissa Clark, Whitney Anderson, Brady Berntson and Bailey Berntson all of Medicine Lake, Lauren Hekkel of Culbertson, Tillie Alveshire and Brittany Jevne of Watford City, and Katie Sperling of Williston.
