MT Department of Transportation Proposes Reconstruction Project on U.S. Highway 2 Through Culbertson

The Montana Department of Transportation would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to reconstruct about 1.3 miles of U.S. Highway 2 through Culbertson in Roosevelt County. The project will begin near the Diamond Creek crossing on the west edge of Culbertson at reference post 644.3 and extend east to the west end of the Clover Creek crossing at reference post 645.5.

The purpose of the project is to improve the surfacing and develop mid- and long-term safety and operational improvements identified in the 2012 Culbertson Corridor Planning Study.

Proposed work in the urban area includes a new and wider surfacing section, curb and gutter, storm drain, new and reconstructed sidewalk within the curb and gutter limits where feasible, on-street parking where it can be safely accommodated, and street lighting. U.S. Highway 2 east of Culbertson will be reconstructed as a rural highway section with wider shoulders. The turn lanes into the rest area/scale site will be perpetuated.

The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2021, depending on completion of all project development activities and availability of funding.

A desirable factor is to contain all work to within existing right-of-way and eliminate the need for either temporary or permanent acquisitions. Utility relocations may be needed. MDT’s consultant will contact potentially affected landowners prior to performing survey work on their land.
