A Library Card is Your Passport to Much More Than Just Books

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Signup Month. During the month of September the American Library Association joins public libraries nationwide to highlight the value of a library card. September also reminds students and families starting a new school year that a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning. So what does your Sidney-Richland County Library card get you in 2017? Lots more than just books!

The library has free WIFI for your mobile or laptop device and we also have 13 adult computers as well as 2 computers just for the little kids. We also have a designated "quick works" station. This station will help patrons who need to quickly check their email or print something. The station will check out in 15 minute sessions for a maximum of 2 sessions.

Avoid fake news and research your topic of interest in the comfort of your own home! In addition to our traditional library research options, we also have a number of different databases that you can access from our website, http://www.richland.org/spl Just click "Online Research" in the left-hand tool bar.

Choose one or all of six different magazines on your mobile device. We still have several magazines in the library (30 available titles in all), but this year the library has added Flipster. Download this app to your mobile or computer device and read one of the following available titles:

Consumer Reports Buying Guide

Field & Stream

Good Housekeeping

Motor Trend

Rolling Stone

Seventeen

Read books or listen to audio books on your mobile device. Access Montana Library2Go by downloading the OverDrive app. Your library card will give you 5 check-outs at a time and you can place a hold on up to 10 items. No late fees...items are removed from your virtual shelf automatically.

Don't hesitate to stop by the library to check out a movie for that long holiday weekend. The library has over 2,000 titles.

Cake pans! Yes, cake pans! Save money and avoid buying that cake pan you use only one time. The library started our cake pan library a little over a year ago and we currently have almost 40 different pans. Don't forget to pick up a couple of cookbooks while you are here.

Need even more? Think outside the building! For just $2 we can request an item from any one of our partnering libraries across the nation.

So here's the million dollar question...how do you get one of these treasured library cards? It's easy! Bring in a photo ID that shows your current Richland County address. If your photo ID does not have your Richland County address then we ask that you bring a piece of mail as an additional proof of address. There is no cost for any Richland County resident to have a library card. We also offer out-of-area library cards for $10 per person annually. If you have questions please feel free to visit with anyone on the library team. Stop by 121 3rd Avenue NW in Sidney, or call 433-1917.
