Halvorson Announces Candidacy for Richland County Attorney

Deputy County Attorney Tom Halvorson of Sidney announces his candidacy for the office of Richland County Attorney.

Halvorson says he is committed to the mission of the office and is qualified to carry it out.

In seeking the office, Halvorson emphasizes his experience, competence, and community values. Halvorson has been Deputy County Attorney for going on 18 years and previously practiced law privately in Sidney for 23 years. He was voted "Best Attorney" in northeastern Montana by readers of the Sidney Herald.

Halvorson was born in Sidney, was raised farming, and immediately returned to Sidney upon graduation from law school in Missoula. Tom has been married to his sweetheart, Marilyn Leastman Halvorson, for 39 years.

Halvorson's community involvement includes being a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a church board member, congregational director of Christian education, member and past officer of civic organizations, treasurer of a community fundraising campaign for Crestwood Inn, and incorporator and founding director of the Sidney Community Education Foundation.

Halvorson graduated from Williston State College in general studies, the University of North Dakota in accounting and economics, and the University of Montana in law.

Halvorson is a life-long Republican and has held numerous party and campaign positions since his teenage years.

When asked, "What is your mission and why are you running," Halvorson said:

"I am grateful to Mike Weber for appointing me Deputy County Attorney in 2000, which gave me the opportunity to be part of the mission of the office. I aim to continue the office's proficient representation of the County and the State. There have been major changes in the law and the organization of the legal system in the past few years. My extensive experience will help in the sizeable task of adapting to these changes. Our office will seek to establish justice in criminal cases, guidance to the Commissioners and County departments in their business, and defense of the County's employees and interests."
