As part of Montana State University's yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary in 2018, June will highlight Extension, the outreach arm of the land-grant university.
With agents and specialists working on campus in Bozeman and in communities across the state, Extension regularly offers programming in four broad areas: community development; agriculture and natural resources; family and consumer sciences; and youth development.
Events this June are geographically and topically diverse, representing the local connection that differentiates Extension from other organizations and highlighting the broad resources available thanks to Extension's partnerships and MSU.
The first featured class is a food preservation workshop June 9 at the Big Horn County Extension Office, 317 N. Custer in Hardin. "Jam and Jelly Making" will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to adults and youth. Registration is required in advance by emailing [email protected].
On June 13, MSU Extension in Ravalli County will offer three opportunities to attend "Legacy Planning: Caring for Your Family and Community," presented by family economics specialist Marsha Goetting. Attendees can choose from one of the following:
9:30-11:30 a.m. – St. Mary's Mission Museum, basement meeting room, Stevensville.
2-4 p.m. – St. Mary's Mission Museum, basement meeting room, Stevensville.
6:30-8:30 p.m. – Daly Leach Community Room, 1010 W. Main St., Hamilton.
On June 18 and 19, MSU Extension Integrated Pest Management will offer the 2018 IPM Workshop: Entomology. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Western IPM Center and Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE), the program includes special guests Jeff Bradshaw from the University of Nebraska and Frank Peais from Colorado State University. The program is worth 15.5 continuing education credits. Participants will receive a sweep net and meals are included. The cost of the workshop is $250 and registration is required by June 15. On June 23, MSU Extension in Fergus County will join with numerous community partners including the Lewistown Downtown Association, Central Montana Cattle Women, Central Montana Women in Farm Economics and Fergus County Farm Bureau to host Montana's Longest Table. The event will feature a Montana-style dinner created from foods that can be grown in Montana, as well as educational opportunities and entertainment. Seating is limited and tickets can be purchased at Seiden Drug, Lewistown Art Center and the Fergus County Extension Office, all in Lewistown. For more information call 406-535-3919.
