It is also important that there is no stigma for those who need our services. • January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

    Lesley Thiessen|Jan 7, 2015

Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of death for women in the United States. However, in the last 40 years, the number of cases of cervical cancer and deaths resulting from it has decreased significantly. The decline is largely due to advances in early screening for precancerous cervical changes that can be treated before the cells become cancerous. Cervical cancer, when caught early, is highly treatable. Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable in most Western countries due to routine screenings and a vaccine to prevent HPV...

  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

    Lesley Thiessen|Oct 1, 2014

The topic of domestic violence has sprung to the forefront of American pop culture in recent weeks as a result of the Ray Rice video. Unfortunately, when the outrage of the American public fades and the public service announcements stop, 25% of all women will still experience domestic violence in their lifetime (CDC). Because 74% of all Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence, we are obviously whispering about it (Allstate Foundation National Poll on Domestic Violence, 2006). We need to do more than...

  • STD Awareness Month

    Lesley Thiessen|Apr 16, 2014

Nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur in the United States every year costing the American healthcare system nearly $16 billion in direct medical costs alone, says a report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). American’s youth shoulder a substantial burden of these infections. CDC estimates that half of all new STDs in the country occur among young men and women aged 15 to 24. This statistic holds true in Richland County. Of the 13 positive Chlamydia cases in Richland County in 2014, 7 were in m...

  • October is Let's Talk Month

    Lesley Thiessen|Oct 16, 2013

“Let’s talk…” These are two very simple words, but for many parents, they are not so simple when the rest of the sentence is “…about sex.” While it maybe uncomfortable, especially at first, research continues to show that children and teens want to receive their information about sexual health from their parents and caregivers. And the simple fact is that parents have an enormous influence on their children’s decisions about sex and other risk-taking behaviors—more than friends, the media or teachers. Each year the National Campaign to Preve...

  • World Aids Day

    Lesley Thiessen, RN|Dec 19, 2012

This year, an estimated 56,300 people will be infected with HIV in the United States. One in 5 of the more than one million people living with HIV is unaware of his or her infection. This year, in recognition of World AIDS Day, Richland County Health Department encourages all citizens of Richland County to get tested for HIV. The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested. You could have HIV and still feel healthy. Many doctors recommend HIV testing for all teens and adults between the ages of 13 and 64. It’s especially i...
