Volunteers Needed For Trails & Rails Program

All Aboard! The National Park Service is again partnering with Amtrak to sponsor the annual Trails & Rails Program on-board the Empire Builder. The NPS is looking for interested individuals to present volunteer programs on-board the train.

Trails & Rails is a partnership between the National Park Service and Amtrak to provide educational programs on passenger trains running through various regions of the country. This program begins in June and runs through early September. Programs on the train run from Williston to Shelby and Malta. Interpretive guides, training sessions and uniforms are provided for volunteers.

Trails and Rails guides provide Amtrak passengers with information on significant cultural and natural sites, the Lewis & Clark expedition, area history, and cultural diversity along the train’s route. Programs are presented intermittently over the train public address system in the lounge car and other designated areas of the train. Volunteers are available to answer questions about the region, the park, the National Park Service, and will work with traveling displays and hand out literature.

Trails and Rails volunteers must be flexible and adaptable to ever-changing situations and audiences. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking in public and working with different people. The volunteers will meet people from all over the U.S. and abroad. They will be able to showcase their talents and develop new skills that will assist in their present or future careers. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and in good health so they can successfully carry out their duties and responsibilities. Volunteers are required to make at least three trips throughout the summer season. Successful candidates will attend orientation sessions on interpreting to the public and performing on-board train assignments.
