Astronomy for Everyone at Your Library

How big is the universe? Why does Saturn have rings? How do I use this telescope to see all the cool stuff I hear about on the Discovery Channel? On November 9th at 7:00pm, you can join us at the Sidney-Richland County Public Library for a special presentation by former NASA consultant Dr. Kevin Manning to answer all those questions, and any others that you can think of! Dr. Manning will give an exciting presentation titled “Astronomy for Everyone: The Size & Scale of the Universe” and then take us all outside (weather permitting) to use his telescope and get “eyes on” with the night sky. People of all ages are welcome to attend, and Dr. Manning’s presentations have received rave reviews at libraries across Montana and the rest of the country. Of course, the evening wouldn’t be perfect unless we included some free popcorn, and door prizes, now would it?

Dr. Manning’s presentation is made possible by an anonymous donor, who also provided some great door prizes. We’ll have solar system kits, bedroom decorations, and even a telescope or two to give away. The Richland County Public Libraries Foundation (that’s RCPLF for short) will also be raffling off two handmade stargazing chairs (constructed and donated by the Savage 4-H Club). Tickets will cost $5 for one, or $10 for 3, and you can buy them starting November 1st at the Library, or at the main event on November 7th. Astronomy is a great way for anyone to get into science and fun for the whole family, especially since we have such amazing views of the night sky around Richland County.

The Library also wants to give a big thank you to all of our friends on Facebook, and the RCPLF for their support of this project and our other programming. If you haven’t heard, we are currently running a “Dollars for Likes” challenge with the RCPLF, where they will donate up to $350 to support library programming. So if you’d like to see more fun events like this one, or if you have some ideas of your own, please head over to our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/sidneyrichlandlibrary. Your Like gets us $1 to support our Teen Poetry Slam (Nov. 16, details coming soon!), new furniture in the kids area and other great projects, PLUS you ‘ll be updated on all the latest happenings and never miss any of our fun contests or programs! We’ll see you on November 9th at 7:00pm, and as always, you can call 433-1917 (or post on Facebook!) if you have any questions.
