Local Schools Participate in County MATHCOUNTS Competition

Junior High students from East Fairview, Alexander, Johnson Corners Christian Academy and Watford City competed in MATHCOUNTS, the annual nationwide math program for junior high school students on February 12th, according to Carol Kieson, McKenzie County Superintendent of Schools, local program coordinator.

The MATHCOUNTS program aims to help improve student interest and ability in mathematic. They have targeted junior high students, who are at a crucial stage in sustaining and developing math skills and interest.

Students compete individually and as a team in written matches. Subjects include probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials. MATHCOUNTS is designed to improve math skills among U.S. students and prepare students for future career opportunities and success.

At the close of the competition the students were treated to a pizza lunch provided by Hot Stuff/Cenex of Watford City.

County scores are forwarded to Region 4. The top two teams and the top eight individuals for the region advance to the state competition held March 5 in Bismarck.

Winners of the county competition were:

First Place Team- Watford City: members; Cooper Knutson, Sean Larsen, Zachary Luallen, Elijah Williams

Second Place Team – JCCA: members; Rachel Meyer, Olivia Niemitalo, Devin Schmitz, John Timmons

Top Three Individuals: 1st Devin Schmitz, JCCA; 2nd Zachary Luallen, Watford City; 3rdElijah Williams, Watford City
