The 2013 Bra Auction, the Cancer Coalition, the Richland County Public Health Connection & Why it Matters

The annual Bra Auction began as a community component to increase needed breast and cervical screening access through the Women’s Health grant obtained by Richland County Public Health, in 2002. The grant is now part of the Montana Comprehensive Cancer Programs (MTCCP) and includes money for breast, cervical and colorectal screenings for a six county region (Dawson, Fallon, McCone, Prairie, Richland and Wibaux) compromising Site 13 in the state of Montana. The Site 13 Cancer Coalition has emerged from the early efforts of the Women’s Health Coalition and the requirement s of the MTCCP grant to involve and incorporate community partnerships in our service region.

Over the past year the Site 13 Cancer Coalition sponsored by the Richland County Public Health Department has sought to expand our mission to include assistance for individuals in Site 13 who have been diagnosed with cancer. It is my pleasure to announce the new Cancer Coalition Endowment and Fund which will allow the Coalition to help ease the burden of individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer.

This year’s Bra Auction proceeds will go to the Cancer Coalition Fund; we hope to raise enough money to impact what we currently can offer individuals who qualify for assistance. For instance, if we raise half the money of the 2012 Bra Auction or $32,500.00 we are able to offer a higher dollar amount to those seeking Cancer Coalition Fund assistance by $200.00 to $300.00 based on a projected 100 applicants in this first year.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of individuals who worked tirelessly from the beginning, when we were the Women’s Health Coalition to the present Site 13 Cancer Coalition membership. Simply stated, we would not be here without them, thank you.

Each of these donors allowed the Coalition to dedicate money for breast, cervical and colorectal screenings for each of the counties Site 13 covers in addition to helping us expand with the Cancer Coalition Endowment and Fund.

In fighting cancer, whether offering assistance in screening for early detection, education for power in knowledge, or monetary relief to individuals diagnosed with the disease, every dollar raised matters. This is especially true when donating to the Site 13 Cancer Coalition, as we do not pay staff to administer in the Endowment or Fund. Also because of the sponsorship by the Richland County Public Health Department, administration for the Site 13 Cancer Coalition is not paid in the money we raise. All funds can be used to benefit local individuals, every cent.

If you have questions about the 2013 Bra Auction, the Cancer Coalition Endowment and Fund or if I have inadvertently forgotten to include you or your business as a donor please call me, Troy, at (406) 433-2207.
