Fourth of July Activities at Fort Union

Fort Union Trading Post will celebrate America’s birthday with a series of programs on Thursday, July 4. Fort Union Park Ranger Richard Stenberg will lead a hike to the Bodmer Overlook, where Swiss artist Karl Bodmer sketched his famous image of the Assiniboine at Fort Union Trading Post during the summer of 1833. Those planning on taking the hike meet in the Fort Union parking lot that morning at 9 a.m. (CDT). From the trailhead, the hike is about 2 ½ miles round trip. Please wear appropriate hiking footwear and shady headgear, and remember to carry water.

Additional activities at the Fort site will include: blacksmithing demonstrations, trade house operations and interpretation, black powder firing, kid’s activities and games in the tipi in the Fort’s courtyard and complimentary lemonade or coffee will be available to visitors. These will be ongoing through the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Bourgeois House at 1:30 p.m. followed by a cannon salute. All programs are free to the public.
