Local Youth Attend Summer Leadership Camp in Orlando

A group of local youth attended the National Youth Leadership Initiative this summer held by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America. During the conference, the youth learned about strategies for prevention work in communities as well as skills to assess and work as leaders in their community. The girls worked together starting in May to raise funds for their trip. With those proceeds, they were also able to enjoy a day at Disney World after the conference had concluded. Each attendant has been involved with their schools' Stand4Youth group and wrote essays on why they would like to go to the conference. All eight of the girls have been active members of their groups at school and showed excitement and initiative to attend.

The Richland County Partnership for Promise and STAND organizations, are members of CADCA and follow their guidelines in their practice. It was a great opportunity to show the leadership and motivation of our local youth and groups and the community should be proud of their accomplishments.

Jackie Damm of the Richland County Health Department and Sheri Williams also attended with Melissa Dean, Project Coordinator for the Richland County Sheriff's Office, to help guide the girls on their trip.

The group will be presenting what they learned at the conference to the Partnership for Promise and STAND. If you would like more information on these programs, please contact Missy Smies or Nicole Hackley at 433-4097 or [email protected] and [email protected].
