Farmers and Ranchers for Montana Applaud

“Reasonable Common Ground” Reached on Water Compact Agreement

Today, Farmers and Ranchers for Montana (FARM), a new grassroots coalition with more than 230 members across the state, praised the agreement reached on a revised water compact after a host of significant changes were made:

“We commend the hard work and diligence of Democratic Governor Steve Bullock, Republican Attorney General Tim Fox, the Compact Commission and CSKT in reaching reasonable common ground on a water compact that incorporates significant improvements over last session’s compact, and will secure access to water for the benefit of all Montanans. Grassroots support from farmers and ranchers across Montana has created real momentum for approval by the legislature.

“After eighteen months of legislative oversight, including analyses by technical and legal experts, the compact has been improved and the legislature will be in a much better position to make an informed decision. Among the significant changes are ensuring that irrigators within the project will have a water delivery right that would establish a property interest that could be conveyed with the land.”
