Coming to Glendive’s Harvestfest & Junkapalooza is like going back in time. Not only are there hayrides, cider press, yard games and vintage furniture, people can try their hand at making butter. This Sunday from noon to 5PM the Harvestfest & Junkapalooza at the Dawson County Fairgrounds offers fun and shopping for all ages. It’s a celebration of local and the last farmers market of the season with entertainment and much more.
Fayette Miller, Curator of the Frontier Gateway Museum will teach kids how to make butter from cream. She will have an old-fashioned butter churn at her table and a variety of molds to show how butter used to be made. Each person will have to do the shaking themselves to turn his small jar of cream into butter. A side benefit is buttermilk they will pour out of the jar.
The cider press hasn’t changed over time. You still have to crank the wheel to grind the apples and then crank the lid down over the ground apples to squeeze out the juice. People are welcome to bring their boxes of apples and jugs to catch the juice. The cider press will be located near the poultry barn away from other activities as it was also popular with wasps last year. Wagons and wheelbarrows can help transport apples, pumpkins, and produce to and from vehicles.
As you come to the fairgrounds, vote for the decorated hay bales lining the entryway. One vote is a $1, with the Chamber of Commerce using the funds for community projects.
Enjoy the entertainment on the free stage from 1to 4PM. Behind the free stage are activities galore: a pumpkin patch, face painting, hay bale maze, pumpkin bowling, and play area, including miniature golf by Boys & Girls Club for $1. Stockman Bank employees will be taking fall photos for $5 with proceeds to the food bank. Live scarecrows will be roaming the grounds.
Bring two pints fresh or canned salsas for the salsa contest by 12:30. Come to taste and vote from 1-4 on the midway by the exhibit building. Thanks to Mexico Lindo for donating the tortilla chips for taste testing. Winners will be announced on the free stage at 4PM. Entrees get their jars back and can win $10 in three categories.
Come hungry to enjoy the wonderful food offered by local vendors including baked goods, treats, pumpkins and produce you can take home. Meet your neighbors or make new friends at the Harvestfest and Junkapalooza Sunday afternoon at the Dawson County fairgrounds.
