Don't Miss Out on this Sweet Event, Friday, Oct. 23rd

Area cooks and bakers will be sweetening the season during this year's Make It with Sugar contest, which will be held Friday Oct. 23 at Reese & Ray's IGA in Sidney. Former Make It with Sugar judge, Randy Jones is looking forward to his first year as a participant. Jones, former Ag Finance Superintendent at Sidney Sugars, had been a contest judge every year since Make It with Sugar got its start, almost fifteen years ago. The contest was started by the Roundup as part of Sugar Days, now Harvest Festival, as a fun event that would mesh well with the sugar beet harvest.

During his days at the factory, Jones says sampling all the entries was something he always looked forward to. Now that he's no longer judging, Jones plans on entering some sweet treats of his own, possibly in the candy category. "Most of my baking is during the winter with my grandkids. It's something fun for them to do," said Jones and adds that he hopes there's a lot of interest this year. "I wish more people would participate in Make It with Sugar because it's such an easy and fun thing to do and the winning recipes get published, so if you really like something, you'll have the recipe to make it yourself."

Entries will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Categories are cakes, cookies, pies, candy, breads and rolls, and other. There is over $500 in prizes donated by local businesses including a pasta and sauce maker, 12" stainless steel electric skillet with spatula, cupcake set and Bake Stack organizer, rolling backpack and magnetic flashlight, gift certificates, a $100 People's Choice Award, and everyone who enters will receive a free bag of sugar for each entry.

Recipes must be included with each entry and recipes must call for at least a half a cup of granulated, powdered, or brown sugar. All entries must be able to be served in individual samples and disposable containers are best since they will not be returned.

Entry forms will be available at Reese & Ray's IGA the day of, or can be filled out in advance and brought in from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the 23rd. Entry forms are available in the Roundup Newspaper and can be brought into the Roundup office prior to the contest at 111 West Main Street, Sidney, MT, 59270.

Blind judging will begin at 10 a.m. and then sampling will be open to the public to determine the winner of the People's Choice Award so make sure to get involved as a contestant for a chance to win some great prizes or stop in and satisfy your sweet tooth!
