The African Children's Choir Will Be Performing In Sidney On May 20

The African Children’s Choir will be performing in Sidney for the third time, Friday, May 20 at the Middle School Auditorium. The internationally acclaimed group will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. and a free-will offering will be taken to help support African Children’s Choir development programs, education, and care.

The concert was initially scheduled at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church, however when the African Children’s Choir performed at the church in 2014, the successful turnout filled the church to maximum capacity. The Middle School Auditorium is the new venue and volunteers are needed to greet attendants, usher, and work at the merchandise table.

Reverend Vicki Waddington initially saw the group perform in Miles City, and said, “It was an experience that I wanted to share and introduce to Sidney. It’s such a cool musical experience and the kids have such energy and passion.”

The African Children’s Choir began amid civil war in Uganda in 1984. Ray Barnett was tasked with caring for orphans in the country, and the African Children’s Choir was formed as a way to make a lasting difference in the lives of those children. Proceeds from the tours have enabled thousands of children to receive a quality education, establishing literacy programs and orphanages in seven African countries, and spreading awareness about the needs of other children in their country.

The African Children’s Choir will arrive in Sidney at 4 p.m. on Thursday and they will stay until Saturday afternoon. There will be 18 kids, seven chaperones, and a bus driver who will be staying with host families in the area; groups of 2-3 kids and one chaperone will stay in the same home and anyone interested in opening their homes Thursday and Friday night can contact the church at 406-433-3110. At 5 p.m. on Thursday, the Lonsdale United Methodist Church will hold a meeting with host families with a potluck to follow at 5:30.

You won’t want to miss this exciting cultural experience! Be won-over by the charm and talent of these amazing kids!
