SSh! Don’t tell. There’s a fundraiser in the works that promises to be a costumed evening of prohibition era libations, dancing and philanthropy.
This year, the Roosevelt Memorial Healthcare Foundation will host its’ annual Fall Fest “Flappers & Fellas” Fundraiser on Oct. 8 at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. The roaring 20s event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail and mingling hour, followed by a three-course steak dinner.
Micro-brewed beers will be on tap with seasonal Squashtoberfest and harvester cream ale from Meadowlark, as well as red and white wines and non-alcoholic drinks.
“We want this year’s event to be outrageously fun. The 1920s were an exciting era filled with dancing, jazz music and social change. The Foundation thought it would be fun to go back in time and enjoy that style and culture for one night,” said Jaimee Green, RMHF Director.
This year’s entertainment will include piano and singing by local talents Chris Bengochea and Gy Salvevold, both originally of Culbertson. Salvevold is a distinguished pianist who has played for audiences at Carnegie Hall and Bengochea has taken his tenor opera voice across the U.S. performing with dozens of professional companies. Together, the two will bring talent and a touch of humor as only they can do.
Of course, flapper dresses and fedoras are optional, but will add to the feeling attendees were dropped in the middle of one of Jay Gatsby’s most outrageous parties!
This year, several new raffles will be added to the event.
A Pearls and Prohibition raffle will give attendees the chance to win one of two solitary, freshwater pearl necklaces. By purchasing a glass of wine for $12, they also receive 10 tickets for entry into the raffle. The rose pearl is featured on a yellow gold chain and the blue pearl is on a white gold chain.
Also, anyone who brings a bottle of wine and pays the $10 raffle fee will have a chance to win all of the bottles that are collected, resulting in their own wine cellar.
A silent auction and live gun and art auction will take place, as well as a baskets raffle and grill raffle. Specifics about the type of gun that will be available have not yet been decided.
The event’s signature Gold Bars Bonanza will feature four grand prizes including the largest prize of four Minnesota Vikings vs. Arizona Cardinals tickets along with complimentary hotel accommodations and zip lining for two. Other grand prizes include $500 cash, a night at the Billing Symphony, or two nights at the Deadwood Gulch Gaming Casino, in Deadwood, S.D.
“At last year’s event, Foundation members asked a handful of attendees to take a brief survey of the evening so they could continue to improve the event. “The reoccurring requests from those responses were to host the event on a Saturday so people didn’t have to work the next morning and also to create a more relaxed atmosphere by offering beer and wine,” Green said. “We will take a survey this year too and continue to receive feedback so that we can make this an annual event nobody wants to miss,” Green added.
All of the proceeds raised from the event will be used to redo the floors and lighting in the residents’ dining room. Eventually, the Foundation hopes to raise enough funds to completely overhaul the flooring throughout the entire facility. It was last updated in 1978.
The reason for choosing to use the funds for this project was purely strategic. “We put in for many local and federal grants throughout the year to ensure we are able to keep pace with equipment and technology and provide our community with the very best care. Often, there are more grants available for purchasing equipment than there are for brick-and-mortar type projects. It’s simply harder to get funding for them, so we felt this event could meet that facility improvement need,” Green said.
Tickets are $75 and will be available beginning Sept. 1 at First Community Bank in Culbertson and Froid, as well as the Richland Federal Credit Union and Hometown Market in Culbertson. Tickets will also be available at Roosevelt Medical Center in the front lobby.
