On Sept. 22 the Roosevelt County Extension Office will hold a meeting discussing Narrow-Leaf Hawksbeard (Crepis tectorum) at the Dry Prairie Rural Water Building located at 5808 on MT Highway 16. Speakers that day will be Valley County Extension Agent Shelly Mills and Ed Davis who is a research associate from Bozeman.
Narrow-Leaf Hawksbeard is a yellow-flowered annual weed that is a concern for both cropland and pastureland. It can quickly overtake an area, producing anywhere from 3,000 to 50,0000 seeds per plant and there is no dormant period needed for the germination process. Seeds can be carried long distances by the wind, as well as being spread by contaminated machinery. It’s presence in Canada and Alaska has been an ongoing issue and it’s listed as a noxious weed in Minnesota, Alberta, and Manitoba.
It was identified around the Froid area this year and seems to be steadily moving south and east. It was also identified in Richland County over the summer, and both counties are looking for ways to manage and limit its presence.
