Darryl R. Nelson, cofounder of NELSON Environmental Remediation Ltd. in Edmonton, Alberta , Canada is the keynote speaker at the fifth annual North Dakota Reclamation Conference set for Feb. 20-21 at the Astoria Hotel and Convention Center in Dickinson, ND. Nelson and his brother founded the company in 1992, which specializes in thermal remediation of soil contaminated with organic compounds such as petroleum hydrocarbons and other chemicals. That process will be the focus of his presentation at 6:30 Monday evening. A welcome reception is planned at 5:30.
In addition to Nelson’s presentation, the conference also includes a trade show and poster presentations and a full slate of speakers set for Tuesday, Feb. 21, addressing current issues affecting oil and gas reclamation related to policies and programs, spill remediation, and ecology. Speakers for Tuesday morning’s Policy Session include Joel Galloway, associate director of the USGS Dakota Water Science Center, who will discuss “Natural Resources in the Williston Basin, What Do We Know?” beginning at 8:10 am. He will be followed by Commissioner Doug Goehring, ND Department of Agriculture, and then Bradley G. Stevens, Senior Research Engineer at the University of North Dakota’s Energy & Environmental Research Center, speaking on “Innovation and Adaptation of the Oil & Gas Industry Throughout Bakken Development.” The Policy Session rounds out with presentations by North Dakota State University (NDSU) Assistant Range Professor Ryan Limb (“Rangeland Reclamation: Regulating Two Energy Industries in North Dakota for Success”) and Cody VanderBusch with the ND Oil and Gas Commission discussing “North Dakota’s AWPSRF Program.”
The Spill Remediation Session includes presentations by: NDSU Asst. Professor of Soil Physics Aaron Daigh (“Approaching brine spills from the surface: A research update on using crystallization inhibitors”), NDSU Extension Rangeland Specialist Kevin Sedivec (“Effects of remediation techniques on selected grass species seeding’s associated with legacy brine waste pits in north-central North Dakota”), Acting Co-director of the ND Department of Health, Dave Glatt (“Oilfield Waste and Spill Remediation”), Jacqueline Finck and Jon Ellingson with Terracon Consultants (“Site Investigation, Remediation, and Reclamation of Oil & Gas and Brine Spills in North Dakota”) and Kirk Hartel of Hartel Reclamation, Inc. (“Advancing Land Reclamation through Tailored, Full-Cycle Service”).
The Ecology Session rounds out the day’s speaker with presentations by USDA-Agricultural Research Service Rangeland Management Specialist David Toledo (“Use of Cover Crops for Revegetation after Energy Development in Northern Mixed Grass Prairie”) and Agronomy Research Specialist Austin Link with the Williston Research Extension Center (“Effects of Cropping Sequence on Pipeline Reclamation in Western North Dakota”).
