Watford City's Homefest Kicks Off June 23rd

Watford City’s annual Homefest offers a jam-packed weekend of events in downtown Watford City that will appeal to all ages. Homefest, a “welcome home” for returning natives and a “welcome” to new residents, will kick off on Friday, June 23rd. This year’s theme is “Born in the USA!”

Food vendors will line Main Street in Watford City beginning at 5 pm, followed shortly by music and a street dance. Killdeer native Chloe Fredericks, who has family roots in Watford City, will open for The Cody Charles Band, a country rock band from the Bismarck area. Music and dancing concludes at midnight.

Also on Friday night is a performance of Treasure Island by the Missoula Children’s Theater beginning at 7:30 at the Intermediate School Media Center. An additional performance is scheduled for 10 am on Saturday in the same theatre.

Saturday morning, June 24th, begins with a pancake breakfast hosted by the local Boy Scouts, as well as registration for the Relay for Life Homefest Run, presented by Rugged West Relay for Life. The run is a 5k run or walk open at all ages, and requires a $35 registration fee for ages 11 and older.

A street fair runs from 10 to 6 on Saturday, featuring food vendors, direct sellers and local crafters. Additionally, the Kids Zone, sponsored by McKenzie County Farmers Union, is open until 6 and features a variety of inflatable toys.

At noon, choose between the “Born in the USA” baby pageant, open to babies ages 0 to 24 months, dressed in red, white, and blue garb; or the annual Trish Gravos Memorial Gold Scramble, at Fox Hills Golf Course. The scramble honors Trish Gravos, one of the founders of Homefest, and includes a steak fry. Registration and fees are required for both events.

At 2 pm, Jessie Veeder will be signing her new book, “Coming Home”, at the Pioneer Museum, in conjunction with the “Hoppin’ 50s” ice cream social.

New this year is the pet parade and costume contest, sponsored by the Watford City Veterinarian Clinic. Dogs, cats, sheep, goats and a range of other pets will compete for three awards, including best owner/pet costume combo.

Homefest concludes with a tribute to veterans, where attending veterans will be called on stage to be honored by children from the Wolf Pup Day Care. Music on Main Street until midnight is by Harley and the V Twins.
