DEQ Accepting Public Comment On Draft Environmental Assessment For Proposed Yellowstone Disposal Landfill

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comment on a draft Environmental Assessment for the proposed Yellowstone Disposal landfill in Richland County. The proposed facility would accept municipal solid waste and oilfield exploration and production solid waste for disposal.

A public meeting will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, at the MonDak Heritage Center. The center is located at 120 3rd Ave SE in Sidney. A presentation on the license application review process and facility details will take place from 6 to 6:30 pm. DEQ and Yellowstone Disposal staff will answer questions and accept comments from the public from 6:30 to 8 pm.

The proposed licensed facility area would encompass 650.7 acres of privately-owned property approximately 4.5 miles southeast of Sidney. The site is located off Montana Highway 23, near the intersection of County Road 352.

The proposed municipal solid waste landfill would encompass 75.2 acres and would be developed in nine separate phases with a total waste disposal capacity of 8,522,100 cubic yards over a projected 64-year life. The oilfield solid waste landfill would encompass 55 acres and would be developed in eight separate phases with a total waste disposal capacity of 5,457,900 cubic yards over a projected 30-year life.

Access to the proposed facility would be provided via Montana Highway 23. Prior to the development of the site, improvements would be made to Montana Highway 23 to support traffic to the landfill.
