LYREC Offering Escape Rooms

As a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Richland County, Lower Yellowstone Rural Electric Cooperative is offering Escape Room events during the month of January.

If you haven’t caught on to the trend, escape rooms are all the rage in the entertainment arena across the nation. Similar to the game of Clue, escape rooms are a staged adventure game in which players are locked in a themed room, and must work together to solve puzzles and riddles to eventually unlock the door to escape. Figuring out each clue leads you to the next, and eventually to find the key to the door. Many enter, few are successful.

These physical adventure games are popping up all over the country, including Billings, Rapid City, and now Sidney.

Pam Wilcoxon and Brenda Bond are the masterminds behind the LYREC rooms. The two ladies set up the rooms for entertainment at the LYREC Christmas party. “I had decided we wanted to do something different for our company Christmas party,” Wilcoxon said. The ladies developed two themed rooms, one following the holiday hit “The Christmas Story”, and the other with a “Back to the Future” theme. “It took a lot of preparation to come up with the themes and the puzzles,” Wilcoxon explained.

But the preparation was worth it. Both LYREC and Boys & Girls Club staff have gone through the rooms at their Christmas parties. “Nobody has escaped so far,” Wilcoxon said. “We’re hoping someone does beat it.” Juanita Johnson of the Boys & Girls Club went through the rooms, albeit unsuccessfully, but added, “It was just hilarious. It’s challenging”.

It was the recommendation of General Manager Jason Brothen to offer the event to the public as a fundraiser for the Club. Brothen sits on the Board of Directors for the Club. All funds generated from the events will go into the Club’s general fund to support the numerous after-school programs.

Though the rooms aren’t scary, the recommended audience is ages middle school and up. Rooms are by reservation only at $20 per person, or $150 per group of 8, and pre-payment by check or credit card is required. The rooms will be available during the month of January on Thursdays and Fridays from 6:30 to 8:00, and Saturdays at 1:00 and 2:30. The rooms are located in the old Sunrise Equipment Building, at 2900 West Holly in Sidney.
