State Historic Preservation Board to Meet Aug. 31

BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota State Historic Preservation Review Board will meet to review nominations on Friday, August 31at 10 a.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Lecture Room A in Bismarck. The nomination presentations are open to the public. The board reviews nominations to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) prior to their submission to the Keeper of the NRHP for official consideration. Written public comments regarding nominations for RSL-3 and the De Mores Memorial Park will be accepted up to Sept. 30, 2018.

De Mores Memorial Park in Medora was first created in 1924 on land donated to the City of Medora by the sons of the Marquis de Mores who founded the town. The statue serving as the focal point in the park created by Pierre Marie Poisson of France, was also commissioned by the Marquis’ sons. The design of the park as it is today is primarily the result of Civilian Conservation Corps projects that took place after the ownership was transferred to the State Historical Society of North Dakota in 1936. The park is now part of the de Mores State Historic Site. This park is significant at the local level under the categories of social history, art, and landscape architecture.

The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s list of properties considered worthy of preservation. The documentation process for listing demonstrates that the resource is significant in some aspect of the nation’s history. Listing in the NRHP does not prevent owners from altering their property, restrict the use or sale of the property, or establish times requiring that the property must be open to the public. Entry into the National Register of Historic Places gives a property prestige, provides protection from federally-assisted projects, and provides eligibility for certain preservation financial incentives.
