Sidney's Thornton Arena is hosting the Tequila Turn barrel racing event on Sunday, May 5th.
The event is approved for the Women's Professional Rodeo Association's Divisional Circuit, and the Outback Barrel Racing Association. The race is a qualifier for the Gunslinger at the Barrel of Gold in Silesia, Montana.
The Cinco de Mayo-themed event presents many opportunities for young and up-and-coming racers to gain experience and earnings. "There are two Women's Pro Rodeo sidepots," said Jana Thornton, event organizer. "The permit sidepot, $200 is sponsored by Netzer Law, for permit holders needing to reach their $1000 earnings to be eligible to purchase their WPRA card." There is also a $250 added Wrangler WPRA sidepot.
For the youngest racers, ages 8 and under, the event offers a 100% payback with prizes for all participants, for only a $5 entrance fee. The Youth 3D, for ages 9 to 15, offers an added $50 sponsored by RESTORx, for a $20 entrance fee.
The open 4D race boasts an 80% payback and an added $1000, sponsored by West Plains, Border Plains and Nortana Grain, for a $40 entrance fee and $10 arena fee. Mystery gift bag prizes are awarded for 1st through 3rd places in the Open Divisions. Shea Michelle Designs has designed a Fast Time Award, and impressive jewelry.
The run begins at 1 p.m. MDT, beginning with PeeWee and following with the Open division. The youth will run in the open division. Time only runs are from 11 to 12:30 MDT for $5 each or 3 for $12, cash at the gate. Text or call your entry to 406-697-0614. You may also enter on site with no late fee.
Covered stall space and hookups are available both at the Richland County Fairgrounds Arena for $20 per stall and $20 per hookup, and on-site stalls are available at Thornton Arena for $15 per night.
