McKenzie Co. Healthcare Systems Welcomes First Ever Pediatrician

As of June 22, McKenzie County Healthcare Systems started offering pediatric care services. Dr. Maria Marchenko, MD, originally from Russia, is the facility's first-ever pediatrician!

Dr. Marchenko graduated from the Russian State Medical University and came to New York to complete her residency program at the New York Medical College. As a board-certified pediatrician, Marchenko has passed rigorous exams given by the American Board of Pediatrics and has met regular continuing education requirements. She has had over 15 years of medical experience and has a broad background of experience dealing with asthma, skin conditions, mental health, and much more.

Marchenko was informed about the opportunity at MCHS, and it appealed to her, so she decided to come for an interview. "When I came for an interview, I liked what I saw, and I really liked the people here," stated Dr. Marchenko. She explained that she is excited about many things - "First the people that are supportive and motivated to get the pediatric program up and running and the administration. Rosie Daly, clinical nurse manager, Visiting Nurse, and Care Coordinator for MCHS, was so helpful in getting the program started - everything required for patient care is here," said Dr. Marchenko.

"We are excited to add pediatric care to the services that we offer here because a big thing the community is focusing on is the fact we will have live deliveries in McKenzie County, and one of the major steps towards that is getting pediatrics. So we have done a great job of working towards developing a quality surgery program. The next step is to getting the pediatric program up and running and then eventually work into those live births," explained MCHS Director of Operation Sam Perry.

Marchenko explained that pediatrics is essential to have for post-delivery wellness check-ups. She plans to deliver the highest level of pediatric care, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics' medical care standards.

A pediatrician is trained to diagnose and treat a broad range of childhood illnesses, from minor health problems to serious diseases. "One of the many things you need to do to prepare for a baby's arrival is to choose a pediatrician to oversee their health care. A pediatrician manages the physical, behavioral, and mental care for children from birth until age 18. Good pediatric care is not only just sick visits - it is regular check-ups. Children need regular preventive care from a doctor, and check-ups will help track and protect your child's health as they grow into an adult," explained Marchenko.

According to http://www.webmd.com, your pediatrician will see your child many times from birth to age 2 and annually from age 2 to age 5 for "well-child visits." After age 5, your pediatrician will likely see your child every year for annual check-ups. In caring for your child, a pediatrician will conduct physical exams, give your child recommended immunizations, make sure your child is meeting developmental milestones in growth, behavior, and skills, diagnose and treat your children's illnesses, infections, injuries, and other health problems, and refer to and collaborate with a specialist if your child becomes ill and needs care beyond the pediatrician's expertise. The mission of the American Academy of Pediatrics is to attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
