Staycation In The Mondak

With gas pushing and even over $5 a gallon more people are having to reconsider their vacation plans for the summer. One of the many considerations is a staycation. According to Webster’s Dictionary, http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/staycation, a staycation is a vacation spent at home or nearby.

When spending a staycation at home a person’s best tool is the local public library. All libraries offer books and movies but some of the libraries have board and card games. The Sidney-Richland County Library also has backpacks with several activities for small children and a Personal Care backpack for those ages 16 and up that can be checked out. The Personal Care backpack contains a self-care game, a yoga game, an adult coloring book with coloring pencils, a sound machine, stress balls, a reusable tea bag, postcards, and a few varieties of loose tea.

The Williston Community Library has STEAM kits that can be checked out for the curious and constructive kids in the area. The McKenzie County Public Library , Watford City, has North Dakota State Parks and Recreation Library Loan Passes that can be checked out and all for free. Even more fun and relaxation can be found outside.

There are lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and state parks all around the area for nature enthusiasts. The Yellowstone and Missouri rivers connect in North Dakota between Trenton and Fairview with recreation access for swimming, fishing, and other opportunities for rest and relaxation along both rivers. Trenton has a lake south of town and Culbertson has its own in-town fishing pond called the Ike’s Fishing Pond and Walking Trail. Medicine Lake, Homestead Lake, and the Johnson Lake Waterfowl Production Area are all north of Froid. Lewis and Clark State Park is east of Williston. Demicks Lake is between Keene and Watford City. Lewis and Clark State Park is east of Williston. Sather Dam is east of Sidney. Gartside Reservoir is between Sidney and Crane. Makoshika State Park is just south of Glendive. Prices differ between areas and intent for use.

There are many tourist attractions throughout the area, as well. Tobacco Gardens Resort is located along the Missouri River northeast of Watford City. The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center, Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, and the Fort Buford State Historic Site are all at the Confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers. Safari Trampoline Park is located in Williston. Glendive has a dinosaur and fossil museum. Several towns have a regional museum. Hotels are pretty common fixtures in the landscape and many have a pool for customers. Massage therapists and spas can be found in the larger towns in the area but these are all for a price. Contact local attractions for details on price, dates, and hours of operation.
