Owen Dotson Benefit To Be Held Sept. 17

The Sidney Elks Lodge is coming together to hold the Owen Dotson Benefit on Saturday, Sept. 17. The benefit is to help a local woman with her son’s medical travel expenses and special needs.

On July 3, 2013, Sidney native, Meagan Dotson gave birth to a son, Owen. Owen was born with OEIS Complex and has had multiple surgeries at Children’s Hospital, Aurora, CO, since. He has also been going to the Shriner’s Hospital in Portland, OR, for his orthopedics for the past six years. Now, he will need to return to Portland on Sept. 27 for a four to six-week treatment in preparation for surgery to put magnetic rods alongside his spine and correct his scoliosis. After he is out of surgery, Owen will have to return to the Shriner’s Hospital every two months to have the rods lengthened to account for his growth. Every time she takes her son to an appointment or procedure in Colorado or Oregon, Meagan is out all the hours she missed working for Temple Tattoo Gallery. Also, Owen is wheelchair bound and every time he needs to get into or out of the family vehicle someone has to take him out of his wheelchair and put him in one of the chairs. At nine years old, Owen is growing fast and will become more difficult to lift the older he gets. Funds raised in the Owen Dotson Benefit will go mostly towards the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible van with a lift so that Owen can stay safe and secure in his wheelchair on vehicle rides. Any remaining funds will go towards monthly expenses.

Sept. 17 will be a busy day for those attending the benefit. It starts with the “Wanna Be An Elk-4 Person Scramble Golf Tournament”. Registration will be from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Sidney Country Club and Tee Off will be at 10 a.m. Registration forms can be picked up at the Sidney Elks Lodge and the cost is $75 per golfer and does not include a cart. Later in the day, at 5 p.m., a Free Will Offering Brisket and Pulled Pork Dinner will be held at the Elks Lodge. There will also be a silent auction as well as a live auction. Merchandise, gift certificates, and/or service donations from local businesses and supporters are still needed to be auctioned off. Financial donations can also be made at the Sidney Elks Lodge.
