Aging Unbound May 12

Growing older doesn't mean you have to be old. The long, cold winter has kept many of us cooped up for way too long, but we are finally seeing new leaves on the trees, flowers in the ground and all the other things that put a spring in our step. Why not let all that newness around you be your inspiration to fill your life with something new as well?

May has long been recognized as Older American's Month and this year's theme is "Aging Unbound". The idea centers around four main topics to help you find the youthfulness of your age.

1. Embrace the opportunity to change; find a new passion, go on an adventure and push boundaries by not letting age define your limits.

2. Explore the rewards of growing older; with age comes knowledge which provides insight and the confidence to understand and experience the world more deeply.

3. Stay engaged in your community; everyone benefits when everyone is connected and involved.

4. Form relationships; enhance your well-being and quality of life by introducing new ideas and unique perspectives.

The Richland County Commission on Aging is celebrating "Aging Unbound" by hosting a fun-filled afternoon for area seniors on May 12, at 2190 W. Holly St., Sidney. The event will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. starting with a picnic style lunch and root beer floats followed by a number of activities that relate to each of the four areas of this year's theme.

If you want to "Embrace the opportunity to change" the event will have plenty for you to try. Pick up a paddle and learn how to play pickleball, get in the game with virtual bowling, darts, or even volleyball or grab some friends for a friendly game of beanbag toss. If games are not your style, sit back and learn something new; Mid-Rivers will be joining us to teach you all about "streaming" as an alternative to cable TV.

To "Explore the rewards of getting older" we'll have all the information you need to use your knowledge to enhance your life. Learn about all the things going on at your local senior center. From book clubs, technology classes, crafts, cards and coffee you're sure to find at least one item to spark your interest.

If you are looking for ways to "Stay engaged in your community" we will have information, sign ups, and opportunities for you to make a difference. You might enjoy becoming a Senior Companion or joining Volunteers in Action. Staying involved not only helps you stay connected but can also make a huge impact to those who are no longer able to do it themselves. Stop by both booths to see what they're all about.

The entire day is designed to help you "Form relationships" which has a positive impact on everyone. This is a great opportunity to get in touch with old friends or make some new ones. Come and share a laugh with other seniors who are determined to remain "Aging Unbound" on May 12th from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
