Grants Available for Montana Tree City USAs

Montana communities with Tree City USA© designation may apply for funding through the 2014-2015 Urban Forestry Grant program offered by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) in cooperation with the Montana Urban & Community Forestry Association.

According to the Urban Forestry Program Manager Jamie Kirby, the grants are competitive-based and aim to showcase urban forests in communities. Three communities will be selected for grants totaling $20,000.

“The purpose of the grant program is to raise awareness about sustainable urban forestry,” Kirby said. “We want to help communities bring urban trees to the forefront by funding projects that will achieve this goal.”

In addition, a portion of project funds will go towards an Arbor Day celebration, one of the requirements of being a Tree City USA©. One of the three winning communities will be selected by the Governor’s office to host the statewide celebration.

“This is an opportunity for communities to come together and appreciate the benefits of trees,” explained Kirby.

The deadline for applications is September 30, 2014. Winners will be announced at the Montana League of Cities and Towns Conference in West Yellowstone on October 10, 2014.
