The Bakken will experience a tasty new family event this summer as the Watford City Food Truck Rodeo rides into the McKenzie County Fairgrounds June 3-5. Foodies can expect many of the state's best mobile food vendors, a full cash bar, kid's inflatables, a cornhole tournament as well as other activities to be announced. Mike Schmitz, event producer and owner of 701 Food Trucks says he's excited to bring a mobile food event to the heart of the Bakken and share a "taste" of the Food Truck scene from around the state. "I have so much admiration for this community, how it's grown and molded into what it has." He added, "Our vendors and staff have been excited about this for a while, and we've already realized the community is as well."
It's not their first rodeo, 701 Food Trucks started the Fargo Food Truck Festival in 2013. And since then, they have added annual Bismarck, Grand Forks and Dickinson events to their mix. Watford City foodies will recognize a few familiar Food Truck faces, such as Williston's Rock N Roll Tacos, but also an awarded mix of ND's best of the best mobile purveyors. Ten+ mobile food vendors will be featured, along with non-food vendors and family friendly activities. There are daily Food Truck competitions; Friday is the Sweet Tooth Taste Test, where select vendors offer up a one-day only $3 sweet treat. Then, Saturday's competition is the Bloody Mary Matchup, where event goers can purchase a bloody mary from the cash bar and collect $2 skewers from contributing vendors. Finally, Sunday's Makin' Bacon Challenge pits participating pork purveyors against each other to produce the best bacon dish.
"It gets pretty fun, a little bit crazy and definitely flavorful, with each of these daily competitions", says Schmitz. Foodies in attendance will also get to cast their vote, for the highest honor in Food Truckland, the "Best of The Fest- People's Choice" award. Many of the chosen trucks have won several of these culinary distinctions, throughout the state circuit in recent years. The event producers are confident that this will become an annual event for Watford City.
