On Friday, March 10, at approximately 6:38 p.m. CST Hwy. 85 near mile marker 178, approximately 5 miles south of Williston there was a fatality crash.
A 2014 Western Star Truck driven by Kenneth Schafer, 67-year-old male, Bridger, MT, hauling a pneumatic sand trailer was traveling north on Hwy. 85 near mile marker 178. A 2018 Ford F350 driven by Bona Son, 29-year-old male, Watford City, ND, was traveling south on Hwy 85. The Ford lost control, crossed into the northbound lanes. The Ford and Western Star Truck collided. The driver of the Ford was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the Western Star Truck was transported to CHI St Alexius in Williston. The driver suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries.
The agencies that responded to the crash were North Dakota Highway Patrol, McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office, Williston Rural Fire Department and Williston Fire EMS.
At the time of the crash the road conditions were icy, blowing snow, with no travel advisory and the weather conditions were snow and high winds.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
