Richland County Property Assessment Public Meeting, July 18

The Montana Department of Revenue’s Property Assessment Division will be holding a meeting, Tuesday, July 18 at the Richland County Event Center, 2118 Holly St. from 1-4 p.m. It is one of several meetings being held across the state to explain how property assessments are determined and answer the public’s questions.

Richland County residents recently received real property classification and appraisal notices. These are not tax bills, but rather assessments used by county treasurers to determine taxable value for 2023 and 2024. The market value of all residential, commercial and industrial properties is required to be updated with current market value every two years and the determination of productivity value for agricultural properties is also every two years.

If property owners disagree with their assessments, they have 30 days from the date on their classification and appraisal notices to submit a request for an Informal Classification and Appraisal Review (form AB-26). The form, and more information about the process, can be found online at and downloaded and printed, or submitted online.

It is important that property owners attend this meeting to have their questions answered and submit necessary Informal Classification and Appraisal Review forms within 30 days of their dated notices as it will be too late when taxes are due in November for changes to be made for 2023. Formal appeals can also be submitted within 30 days to the County Clerk and Recorder’s Office to be reviewed by the County Tax Appeal Board, which is not connected to the Department of Revenue, rather an independent board appointed by county commissioners. However, your local office would like the opportunity to review your property with you before you file with the County Tax Appeal board. After this review, a formal appeal can also be submitted if a property owner disagrees with the outcome of the informal review. Those who miss the 30-day deadline will have until June 1, 2024 to submit an Informal Classification and Appraisal Review for 2024.
