Opening Mic Programs Offered In Williston

The James Memorial Art Center and Williston Music Intensive are partnering to bring the Williston Community a new all-inclusive open mic opportunity that celebrates and challenges young artists. The first event is scheduled for Monday, April 29, at 6 p.m. Spotlight will be held monthly on Friday evenings moving forward.

Spotlight was an idea born by Williston Music Intensive’s Alma Cook to provide an all-ages music venue that invites musicians to exercise their artistry and to fill in the time between WMI events and keep the community alive. All genres of music will be welcome and a featured performer or band will play in the second half of the evening (April 29 will feature Alina Aminova). In addition to the public performances each month, supplemental studio hours on off-weeks will also be provided to help performers hone skills.

According to Cook, the James was chosen as a partnering venue for several reasons: The James is an all-ages space where parents will feel good about letting their teens hang out, there’s an overlap in vision: share art & culture with the community of Williston, and many young people expressed that the venue is more “vibey” than other options.

Williston Music Intensive (WMI) was founded in 2022: a multi-day workshop to inspire, edify and unite the disparate Williston music scenes (club players, church players, high schoolers). For more information about WMI or Spotlight, please contact Alma Cook at [email protected] or [email protected].

The James Memorial Art Center is located at 621 First Ave. West, Williston. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Friday 1-5 p.m. September – April. The gallery is open on Sundays from 1-5 p.m. It is closed on major holidays.

Exhibitions, receptions, and other regularly scheduled events are free and open to the public.
