Sept. 8 each year marks International Literacy Day. For organizations like the Learning Volunteers for Adults (LVA) of Richland County, it’s a reminder of their work helping adult learners gain the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
LVA is a community-based program dedicated to improving the reading, writing, math, and English language skills of adult learners. Through one-on-one, in-person tutoring and flexible online study options, the organization meets learners where they are—academically and personally. Whether someone is preparing to earn their High School Equivalency (HiSet), improve job prospects, or simply build confidence in daily life, LVA offers support every step of the way. Any adult interested in improving foundational skills is welcome to enroll—for free.
In a recent enhancement to their services, LVA purchased licensing for Aztec, a robust online learning platform. This new resource gives students free access to HiSet preparation materials and skill-building exercises they can work through at their own pace and on their own schedule.
LVA’s work is made possible through support from the Richland County Commissioners, and includes a close partnership with the Sidney-Richland County Library, where the LVA office is located.
Heather Cotter, library director, says “Sidney-Richland County Library is grateful for the collaboration with LVA and to be able to host its office at the library. It just makes sense for two entities who engage in the importance of promoting literacy to work together. Literacy is an especially valuable tool in the foundation for learning and is a crucial part of individual success and community success.”
The library is a community living room providing lifelong learning through a multitude of services. Things such as the summer reading program encourage literacy growth in the younger generations and creates a strong foundation for young learners. Other resources include public computer access, wireless internet, hot spot checkouts and a well-rounded digital collection available to the community and all for free. Literacy development can be found in just about everything the library offers and sometimes without people even realizing it. The library is here to serve the community and its needs. Being able to partner with LVA enhances the ability to accomplish that.
A library card is free to residents of Richland County, or $10/year for out of county residents. All that’s needed to obtain a card is an ID and proof of address.
Whether you’re looking to volunteer, donate, or simply spread awareness, International Literacy Day is the perfect time to get involved. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a tutor or receiving tutoring, stop by the LVA office at the Sidney-Richland County Library during open office hours (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.) or schedule an appointment.
