  • Guest Opionion: Vote “NO” on Constitutional Measure No. 3

    Oct 24, 2012

At first glance, Constitutional Measure No. 3 sounds good. I’ve listened to the ads supporting it and they are emotionally appealing. Most of us in North Dakota have strong, positive feelings about ranching and farming and we want to do what we can to support them. However, this measure has the potential to create unforeseen and unwanted problems. One area of concern is the use of chemicals in farming. Most farmers are dependent on them and there is ongoing research to continue their use to improve crop production. However, take the example of...

  • Montana's Next Governor Likely To Face A GOP Legislature

    Jonathon Ambarian|Oct 24, 2012

While polls show a tight race for governor, the odds are with Republicans in the statewide battle to control the next Montana Legislature. On Nov. 6 Montana will elect all 100 of the members of the state House of Representatives and 26 of the Senate’s 50 members. Jeff Greene, a professor of political science at the University of Montana, said that it is possible, but unlikely, that the Democrats will take back control of either house of the Legislature. But he does expect them to win back several districts that had typically voted Democratic b...

  • Supreme Court Rivals Run On Experience, Dodge Partisan Labels

    Allison Connell|Oct 24, 2012

The race for Montana’s lone contested Supreme Court seat could take a partisan twist now that a federal court has allowed political parties to endorse judicial candidates. In mid-September, the 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals overturned Montana’s law forbidding party endorsements in nonpartisan judicial campaigns. That means the parties are free to endorse either Missoula attorney Ed Sheehy or District Judge Laurie McKinnon whether the candidates want them to or not. McKinnon, whose 9th Judicial District stretches to include Glacier, Toole, Pon...

    Oct 24, 2012

After a rocky start which included heat, rain and frost delays, the 2012 beet harvest was able to go full speed until rain and wind shut down several stations October 17 and 18. Sidney Sugars agricultural manager Russ Fullmer reported tremendous tonnage averaging 27 to 28 tons per acre, but a disappointing sugar average of approximately 17.9. “The frost the first week of harvest stopped the sugar, “ Fullmer said. “The plant also uses some of the stored sugar to regrow leaves, reducing the content even more. The sugar content would have conti...

After a year of unprecedented warmth this summer, coupled by last winter’s milder temperatures, the debate over whether Old Man Winter will make an appearance this year is the topic of discussion for many. “It is difficult to predict exactly what will happen this winter in our area. I do not think it will be a particularly bad winter and may be milder than normal, but again, at this point it is really all speculative. The Climate Prediction Center in Washington, DC is predicting warmer, and mil...
