Extended Care Quilting Tea Party

Sidney Health Center Extended Care hosted a “Quilting Tea Party” for the lady residents on Thursday. Along with delightful table decorations and treats, the ladies were treated to music by Vicky Vaira and Sarah Karanjai, some poems and a sing-along.

A highlight of the party was the showing of a quilt made by Vi Tanglen, and the story behind it. The story as told by Vi is as follows. “As a child, I would love going to Grandma’s house. She had a cedar chest filled with quilt blocks that she had made many years ago. While at Grandma’s, I always made a habit of going to the cedar chest and looking at each square. It was Grandma’s dream that I piece all the blocks together for her. Each of her blocks was carefully cut and stitched with love. It was so important that I find the perfect fabric. The fabric couldn’t be just any ordinary color. No, it had to be perfect, just like the love she had put into each square block.

One day during church I was listening to the pastor tell the story about Joseph and his coat of many colors. How Joseph loved his coat, but his brothers envied him because they did not have a coat like that. I began to realize that Grandma had chosen me for a special project that she wanted me to complete.

I began to pray that God would help me make Grandma’s Quilt of Love into a reality. One night I had a dream and in that dream I saw this beautiful lace with Grandma’s quilt squares and I knew right where to find this treasure, It was in the bottom of the cedar chest. This must have been Grandma’s plan for the quilt blocks all along because when put together, it was the most beautiful quilt I had ever seen.
