Come one, come all to the Montana Historical Society History Conference in Sidney to join in on a celebration of history in eastern Montana that is jam packed with events for everyone.
“We are Montana’s Historical Society, and it is an honor to have our conference in this part of the state that holds a special place in the history of the Treasure State,” MHS Director Bruce Whittenberg said.
The three-day conference Sept. 19-21 is titled “Boom & Bust: Extracting the Past.” Although it will have a special focus on the history of the oil industry that is having another boom period, there will be a variety of other topics, workshops and tours.
If you have not already signed up for the conference, you can do so at the Richland County Fair Event Center, 2218 W. Holly Street in Sidney. The cost of the conference including all presentations, banquet meals, workshops and tours is $145.
Persons who can’t attend all events can register by the day or for events at conference headquarters. Space available, you can also sign up for single presentations.

Topics besides those related to the history of oil in eastern Montana include things like “The Rise and Fall of Open-Range Cattle Raising on the Montana Plains, “Considering the Danish Colony: Edgar Syverud in Photograph and Word, “How I Cook, Keep House, Help with the Farm Work Too,” “What the Ledgers Tell Us: An Examination of Native Women’s Influence in the Fur Trade on the Northern Plains,” and many more.
Special guided bus tours will go to the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, Fort Buford Historic Site and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center.
