Since Al and Myrtle Johns opened Sidney Greenhouse in 1942, successive owners have committed to providing fresh flowers and more for every occasion from birth to death.
Shirley Bergerson started working at Sidney Greenhouse in the early 80s for Steve and Bob Mullin. In 2000, she and her husband Doug became sole owners. And now, after a lifetime in the floral business, the Bergersons are ready to do something else, "even if it's nothing". The building has been sold and Shirley is "tickled". "I'm ready to start a new phase, ready to do something else," she said.
Bergersons held their first open house on Halloween. This year, it will be the final day of business for Sidney Greenhouse.
Although October 31 is the last day of regular business, the Greenhouse will be open November 10 through December 12 for a "giant garage sale" to dispose of all the inventory and the fixtures. Everything must go Bergerson says.
Shirley is happy about moving on to other adventures, but she will miss certain aspects of the store. "I will miss doing flowers, it's second nature to me. I will miss the people the most, the camaraderie that we've shared over the years," she said.
"This will be the first time I've actually gotten to enjoy the holidays," Shirley said. We wish her lots of happy holidays.
