Montana and North Dakota have many homes built before 1978 which may contain lead-based paint. Companies and contractors in all states doing work on these homes and some other buildings are required to be trained and EPA Certified. To become certified, contractors can now take a training offered by MSU Extension in Sidney, MT.
Common renovation, repair, and painting activities that disturb lead-based paint can create hazardous lead dust and chips which can be harmful to adults and even more so to children. The term renovation covers all activities done for compensation that disturb painted surfaces including most interior and exterior repair, remodeling, painting and maintenance activities. But with careful work practices and thorough clean-up, renovations can be done safely. EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP Rule) lowers the risk of lead contamination from home renovation activities. It requires that companies performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and pre-schools built before 1978 be certified by EPA and use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices. Training, certification, and work practice requirements in the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule were effective April 22, 2010. Non-compliant contractors may be fined up to $37,500.00 per violation.
To provide the EPA RRP training and certification, the MSU Extension and Health Department of Richland County are hosting the 8 hour certification class on June 4th at the Richland County Extension Office (1499 N Central Ave, Sidney, MT 59270). The class begins at 7:30 AM and ends at 6:30 PM with a break for lunch. The cost of the certification is $200.00 per person. Refreshments will be provided. The class will be taught by Mike Vogel, MSU Extension Housing and Environmental Health Specialist and EPA Approved Training Provider. Since the RRP Rule went into effect Vogel has trained over 2000 contractors throughout Montana and U.S. One training certifies for 5 years.
Pre-registration and payment are required by May 23rd. State-rate hotel rooms are reserved for participants who register before May 4th.
