Block Management Basics: What Are BMA Hunter Responsibilities?

Block Management is a cooperative effort between Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), private landowners and public land management agencies to help landowners manage hunting activities and provide free public hunting access to private and isolated public lands. Region 7 alone has over 320 Block Management Area (BMA) cooperators providing over 2.4 million acres of access.

Each BMA has its own rules agreed upon by the landowner(s) and FWP regional personnel. Hunters, be sure to read, understand and follow the rules for the BMA you plan to hunt. Ethical behavior afield, in following rules for such instances as obtaining permission, vehicle restrictions, game retrieval, hunting area boundaries, camping, etc., will help assure future access to private lands. BMA use is managed through Region 7 headquarters in Miles City, with staff helping to direct hunters to BMAs with available opportunities.

For specific information on Block Management in Region 7 please contact FWP at 406-234-0930 or for more information in other regions please go to http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/hunterAccess/blockman/.
