    Jordan Hall|Mar 22, 2017

Giving many needed resources to Bakken-area charities has heretofore gone unadvertised and unpublished for one oilfield company. It has not been a calculated business decision that has led Loenbro to give so generously to organizations in Richland County, and so there have not been press releases or photo opportunities with giant checks being handed to the happy recipients of their generosity. According to Loenbro’s Business Development Officer, Lee Haven, their considerable giving to f...

  • Bill Would End Tax Holiday for New Oil and Gas Wells in Montana

    Freddy Monares|Jan 25, 2017

Lawmakers in Helena are considering a bill that would infuse money back into the state's main revenue fund by increasing taxes on new oil and gas wells. House Bill 215 would remove what is called a "holiday tax," which is a tax incentive for oil and gas companies during the first year of production on a well. The current tax for new wells is half a percent of gas production. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Mary Ann Dunwell, would increase that to 4.5 percent. "I consider this low-hanging...

  • Northern Oilfield Services Survives Slowdown

    Jessica Sena|Jun 1, 2016

Oil prices have started to make gains after a turbulent year in the Williston Basin. Just two short years ago, the Bakken was booming with activity. North Dakota was steadily producing more than 1.1 million barrels of oil every day with an average rig count of around 200. In the “shallow end of the pool”, as some say, production hovered around 80,000 barrels of oil per day in Montana, with less than 20 drilling rigs at any given time. Permit and rig counts have declined dramatically. In Montana, permits for new wells have been declining since a...

  • Oil Industry At Risk Over Pipeline Lawsuits

    Michael McDonald|Jun 1, 2016

One of the key factors in the survival of the Bakken oil patch in the future will be affordable transportation options. Bakken producers receive lower realized prices for their output due to the transportation costs associated with moving the product as well as the difficulty in storing it. This issue has been a persistent problem for years, but crude by rail has helped make the issue less problematic over time. Pipelines are the next step for the Bakken if it is to become a sustainable long-term oil producing area. Yet putting in a simple...
