Crescent Electric Supply Company is one of the largest independent distributors of electrical, electronic, safety, data communication and industrial automation equipment and related products in the United States. A third-generation, family-owned business employing more than 1,500 employees; the company consistently ranks in the top 10 largest electrical distributors in the U.S.

Headquartered in East Dubuque, Illinois, Crescent Electric owns and operates 132 distribution facilities in 26 states. Servicing the needs of electrical contractors, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), as well as the maintenance, repair and operation (MRO) needs of commercial, industrial, institutional and utility companies nationwide in this $84 billion dollar industry, remains a priority.

Crescent Electric Supply Company was established by Titus B. Schmid on April 15, 1919 in Dubuque, IA. Titus was an electrical contractor who found it difficult to obtain equipment on a timely basis. At that time material had to be ordered from either “up the river” in Minneapolis or “down the river” from St. Louis. Until the opening of the Crescent Electric branch in Sidney, MT contractors had a similar scenario; material had to be ordered and shipped. The Sidney branch fills a need for stocked-product and service, in the electrical and industrial wholesale markets, in eastern Montana. By responding to opportunities, in the past and present, Crescent Electric is able to grow and service a continuing need.

Though many believed that the business of stocking and distributing a huge variety of electrical supplies could only thrive in large metropolitan areas, Titus saw that the demand for all this new technology was just as strong in the smaller cities and towns as it was in the large cities. In spite of what the “experts” said and in spite of the daunting task of carrying a large and constantly changing inventory for this rapidly changing technology, he put the needs of his customers first and put his faith in the old peddler’s maxim, “you can’t sell from an empty wagon.” He founded his company on simple but timeless business principles: sell quality merchandise, price it competitively, and keep it close to your customers.
