Native American Astrology & Views Of George Catlin Featured During Indian Arts Showcase

Nationally known American Indian Historian Mr. George Horse Capture and Nationally recognized American Indian Educator and Activist for Native Rights Dr. Janine Pease will headline the 20th annual Indian Arts Showcase at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. This special event will take place the weekend of August 6 &7, on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm each day. The event is free.

Horse Capture is a member of the Gros Ventre or White Clay tribe out of Fort Belknap Montana and was Senior Counselor to the Director in the Cultural Resources Department at the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of the American Indian. He's written numerous articles and books on American Indian tribes on the Northern Plains. Horse Capture will give presentations on George Catlin at Fort Union-Native views at 3 pm CDT Saturday and 3:30 pm CDT Sunday.

Dr. Pease was the founding president of the Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency Montana, a past president of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (for two terms), a director of the American Indian College Fund (for seven years), and was appointed by President Clinton to the National Advisory Council on Indian Education (for eight years). She was also a trustee of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. She is currently the Director of Education for the Crow tribe. She will give presentations on "The Stars we Know, Native American Astrology," at 12 pm CDT on Saturday and 1:00 pm CDT Sunday.

In addition drum and dance performances will be done daily by the Eagle Feather club from New Town, North Dakota and drum group Tatanka Oyate from Poplar, Montana at 1:30 pm CDT on Saturday and 2:00 pm CDT Sunday. Native American artisans will display their arts and crafts throughout the day.

Hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm CDT daily at Fort Union. Fort Union Trading Post is located 24 miles north of Sidney, Montana and 25 miles southwest of Williston, North Dakota, via highway 1804. While here, visitors are encouraged to tour the reconstructed fort, trade room and bourgeois house.
