Mason Named SHC Extended Care Resident of the Year

Sidney Health Center’s Extended Care held their Resident of the Year party on Tuesday, January 29th.

Every year, for the last 20 years, the staff at Extended Care has voted on which resident deserves the honor of Resident of the Year. This year’s winner was Kelly Mason. Kris Radke, Activities Director at Extended Care had the following to say about Kelly Mason, “Doing stuff for others brings a lot of purposeful meaning to his life.” Mason is often seen pushing residents in their wheelchairs or bringing them coffee.

The following is the speech, given by Kris Radke during the Resident of the Year party:

Our Resident of the Year was born on August 24th in Glasgow, MT. Soon after his birth the family moved to Fairview where his father managed the grain elevator.

Growing up, our Resident of the Year came to know the true meaning of hard work. He helped his father farm and work in the grain elevator. His family and friends remember him as someone who always looked out for the underdog. He stood up to bullies and was very protective of the people he cared about.

Our Resident of the Year was the jokester of the family. His favorite joke was putting cigarette loads in his Mom and Dad’s cigarettes. The first time they thought it was funny, the second time not so much.

Our Resident of the Year loved Halloween and all the pranks he could pull on his friends and family. His sister recalls that one year he took the wrappers off of tiny Baby Ruth candy bars and put them in toilet paper then handed them out to the trick or treaters. He also loved to scare his sister. He would scratch the window outside her bedroom at night or hide behind the couch wearing a scary Halloween mask.

Our Resident of the Year excelled in high school sports, playing football and basketball. He was a high scorer, had the best shooting percentage and most assists for his team. He earned all conference awards and was named to the all tournament and all state team. Our Resident of the Year still enjoys following the Fairview Warriors and loves watching sports on TV.

Our Resident of the Year loves his daughter April and his granddaughter Ciarra. He is so proud of both of them.

Our Resident of the Year’s sister is thankful for his dedication and love for his family. She states, “It was because of him that our mom was able to stay in her home as long as she did. He was there to help care for her and provide anything she needed. He made her meals and watched TV with her which she loved.”

Our Resident of the Year came to live at Extended Care in June 2011. Still today he continues to put others in front of himself. Staff has come to love his joking personality and his caring nature.

Sidney Health Center Extended Care is proud to announce Kelly Mason as Resident of the Year.
