  • Behind the Wheel

    Lois Stephens|May 12, 2021

Many decades ago when I was 15, I couldn’t wait to get my driver’s license. I figured a license would give me freedom; I could join the world of responsible drivers and transport myself hither and yon without the embarrassing need to have my parents or an older sibling chauffer me from place to place. The thought of driving filled me with glee. Well, after nearly six decades of driving, I am cured of that particular itch. In the last 50+ years, not only have I driven thousands of miles to get to and from a workplace, but I’ve also driven cross...

  • Cowboys Had It Right

    Lois Stephens|Jul 15, 2020

Cowboys knew what they were doing, in more ways than one. Remember those oversize bandannas they always wore around their necks? Just think, that big kerchief served a multitude of uses. Cowboys could use those fabric neckpieces as a cooling cloth on the neck when they wet the material, they could fix the bandanna over their faces as a shielding mask in a dust or snowstorm, wipe noses, mop up blood from scratches obtained riding through sagebrush, stem bleeding from a gunshot or arrow wound, or use it to disguise themselves when it came time to...

  • As Montana Prepares To Reopen, State Lacks Local COVID-19 Testing Data

    Eric Dietrich and Katheryn Houghton|Apr 22, 2020

Original story courtesy of Montana Free Press As Gov. Steve Bullock moves to roll back emergency measures enacted to slow the COVID-19 pandemic, he has said he’ll take a data-driven approach to reopening Montana’s economy while minimizing the risk of a second-surge outbreak. State officials are keeping a close eye on the number of laboratory-confirmed cases. However, they aren’t tracking the number of Montanans who’ve been tested in each county, a metric national experts say is important to fully understand how the outbreak is playing out in...

  • Family Reunions

    Lois Stephens|Oct 16, 2019

I love my three siblings. After all, we grew up together, we knew what buttons to push if one of us wanted to start an argument, and we also knew the way to soothe those ruffled feelings. We banded together against perceived outside threats, we kept one another’s secrets, we understood and, in most cases, empathized with their problems as we navigated ourselves through childhood. In short, we grew up in a typical fashion and learned to respect and care about one another. Of course, we all matured and flew away with the four winds. All four of u...

  • Ancient Artifacts

    Lois Stephens|Jun 12, 2019

I think I have moved to the right place. It seems in most parts of the country older people no longer receive the respect they deserve. We're often looked upon as a burden, as using up vanishing natural resources; younger people don't value our expertise nor do they want our advice. 'Old' often equates with relic, antique, artifact, shopworn, and used up. However, in Virginia City people delight in old objects. Visitors come from all fifty states and around the world to view the dated treasures...

Searching for fun this spring season? Why not a road trip across the country? Last week I did just that with my father. My dad was in Cape Coral, FL visiting relatives and I flew down to drive him back to Montana. Our first stop was on Pine Island, FL to the town of Matlacha. • Your Boots On The Hill: The Rest Is History

    Chelcie Cargill and Liv Stavick|Feb 27, 2019

This week was certainly one for the history books. Montana Farm Bureau celebrated its 100th birthday on February 13. It was only fitting to celebrate our 100th birthday at the Capitol building; it took an act of the State Legislature and the signature of Governor Sam V. Stewart on Senate Bill 30 in 1919 to allow the formation of Montana Farm Bureau. Originally, Montana Farm Bureau was the volunteer, grassroots organization under Extension Services. The legislature had to provide funding for more Extension Agents throughout Montana to help...

  • Guest Opinion

    Judy Patrick|Aug 15, 2018

We’ve been complacent. We thought everybody knew how important a free press was to our world and that all this talk about us being the enemy of the people would be dismissed for the silliness that it is. But the reckless attacks have continued, instigated and encouraged by our president. When the leader of the free world works to erode the public’s trust in the media, the potential for damage is enormous, both here and abroad. We once set an example of free and open government for the world to follow. Now those who seek to suppress the fre...
